Whenever a person pays a price for a commodity or a service and uses it the person becomes a consumer 
However some of the shopkeepers try to cheat the consumer 
By giving a poor quality goods or charging more than a actual price for it . 
The consumer must be aware of their rights and the policies the government has drawn to protect their rights 
In today’s economy with expansion business activities we have a variety of goods available in the market as well as no of services including insurance, transport, electricity, banking ,finance , 
Most of our is   should for good and services is influenced by the advertising in television, newspapers and magazines 




The companies spend a considerable amount of advertisements to attract consumer and feed information that they want to know but not to information that we are consumers need to know about the products 



We as a consumer are exploited in many ways like underweight and under measurement, standards sub quantity, higher prices  etc 

The consumer are exploited mainly because of following reasons - 



  1. Consumer are mostly unaware about the actual price of a commodity as they have limited  information 
  2. Many of the times the consumers are exploited because the goods and services are not available in the required quality and quantity 
  3. Limited competition among the producers also provides scopes for the exploitation of the consumers  
  4.  A large number of our population in India is formed by illiterates 
  5. Their illiteracy gives a good opportunity to a shopkeeper to exploit them



To check the exploitation consumers should be aware of their rights ad a matter of fact the concept of the consumer protection is not new for India
The consumers have various rights as well as several duties also 
The rights as a matter of fact that rights to safety, rights to information, right to choose , rights to seek redressal etc 
While duties include the following things :-
  1. While purchasing the goods the consumer must look at the quality of the product’s as well as on the guaranteed  of the product and services 
  2. Consumers should also ask for the cash memo for their purchases 
  3. Consumers should also from consumers awareness organisation 
  4. And above all  the consumers must know their rights and must exercise them because the real protection of the consumer is possible only with the active involvement of the consumers 

The consumer protection was enacted by government in 1986 this act ha a led to setting up a separate government department of the consumers affairs in central and state government which focuses exclusively rights of the consumers as enshrined in the act  
the most imp feature of this act is the provision for setting up a tier-system that is the consumers affairs in the central government . 
that the consumers court at a national level , state and district levels 
as a national level it is a consumer commission at the state level it is called state consumer commission    at the district level it is known as the district forum and its the most import court in the field  .
